Off the Field: Athletes’ Social Initiatives Making a Difference

Although the scope of sports journalism is often limited to a specific sport, stories about athletes and other aspects of the sport are frequently incorporated into general news coverage. In such cases, the sports story transcends its original subject matter and takes on a more socio-political context; for example, Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball or the expense to local and national governments of staging the Olympic Games.

The Sporting News was founded in 1886 by Alfred Spink, a director of the St. Louis Browns baseball team. He sold the first issue of the weekly newspaper for 5 cents. The paper primarily focused on baseball but also covered horse racing and professional wrestling. In 1936, it established its prestigious Major League Baseball Player of the Year Award, which is still given to the player who has had the best season in the league to this day. In 1946, the newspaper added in-season football coverage to its lineup of baseball and basketball.
